Doubt It (Part 2): When You're Hanging By A Thread
TO START
This Sunday, we entered into part 2 of a series called Doubt It. A series that speaks into the current and common wrestlings that can be experienced in either considering or having faith in God. Start discussion off with this question:
On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate the spiritual health of your heart in this season (1 = completely closed off to God & 10 = intimately open-hearted toward God). Explain.
This week we are inviting your group to choose questions from the multiple options below. Our hope is that these questions might help you to lead your discussion in a way that makes sense for your group this week as y’all “talk it out” and “live it out”.
TALK IT OUT AFTER READING MATTHEW 5:1-10
STUDY
Which beatitude do you connect with the most? And which seems the most outrageous/confusing to you?
Proverbs 4:23 states, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” What does guarding your heart mean? How is that connected to being pure in heart?
PROCESS
Do you connect with God more through your mind and reason or through your heart? Why?
Why do you think we sometimes go through the motions of Christianity while our hearts are far from God? What are some signs that your heart is drifting?
What keeps you from getting in the cage with the lion at heart level (Feeling that God has let you down, church hurts, personal trauma, etc.)?
LIVE IT OUT
PRACTICE
Which mentality blinds your heart the most from seeing God: 1) an individualistic mentality, 2) a go-go mentality OR 3) an always craving mentality? (help the group by summarizing them)
What would it take for you to saturate your life in prayer & Scripture more than receiving digital content?
PRAY
Practice a rhythm of silence and prayer together as a group. Set a timer for 5 or 10 minutes and invite the group to do 3 things: 1) consider where their mind wanders in the silence 2) turn to Galatians 2:20 and read it silently 3 times & 3) Ask Jesus to reveal himself. Then, when the timer goes off, invite each person willing in the group to answer this prompt. “God, I thank you for _____”
