The Miraculous Work of Jesus (Pt. 6): Miraculous Vision

TO START: In this series, we walk through the seven miracles—or “signs,” as John calls them—recorded in his Gospel. Each miracle beautifully reveals both Jesus’ identity (who He is and what He’s like) and His work (what He does and will ultimately accomplish).  In John 9, Jesus miraculously gives sight to a man blind from birth—revealing Himself as the Light of the World, who not only brings light to our inner lives but also shines through us to illuminate God's reality to others around us.

TO READ: John 9:1-9

TO DISCUSS:

(1.) If you had to be stuck overnight somewhere in the dark, where would you not want it to be?

(2.) In John 9, the disciples want an explanation for the man’s blindness. What ache in your life, or in the world, is hardest to simply hold without needing an explanation?

(3.) Why do you think Jesus mixes dirt and spit to heal the blind man’s eyes instead of just speaking the healing over him like He does elsewhere with others?

(4.) Jesus reveals Himself as the “Light of the World.” When His light entered your life, what do you remember changing first in your inner world?

(5.) When Jesus transforms us, we become almost unrecognizable to who we once were. What about you do you long to see that kind of transformation in for your future?

TO CLOSE/TO PRAY:

In John 9, Jesus doesn’t just restore physical sight–He reveals a deeper spiritual truth: that He is the Light that breaks through blindness, confusion and darkness. Take a moment and invite the group to consider these two questions in the quiet of prayer, pausing for a minute after each one: 1) Are there any areas in my life that are still covered in spiritual blindness–places I’ve accepted darkness instead of inviting Your light? 2) What ways has God brought light to places in and around your life that have transformed things? Lastly, close the prayer by inviting anyone to share if there was something specific that bubbled up that they want to name in prayer and then end by thanking Jesus for the truth of who He is… “even the darkness is not dark to [Him]” Psalm 139:12
