In My Head (Part 1): Silencing the Stigmas
TO START A key part of discipleship to Jesus is allowing our minds to be renewed day by day. Because our minds play such a central role in following Jesus, it’s important for us as a church family to talk openly about mental health. Whether we’re wrestling internally or walking alongside others who are coming home to God, we can all grow in awareness and compassion as the Spirit renews our minds.
In the first message of our series, In My Head, we will confront three stigmas surrounding mental health that shape how we view our faith, how we understand God, and how we see ourselves when we face mental and emotional challenges.
TO READ: Psalm 13:1-6
TO DISCUSS:
(1.) When you were growing up, were there any subjects no one talked about that you wish had been discussed?
(2.) When you think of moments in Scripture where God’s people experienced mental anguish or felt downcast, who comes to mind?
(3.) When in your life have you resonated with the psalmist who says, “How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart?”
(4.) What has your experience been in faith settings when it comes to discussing mental health?
(5.) In Psalm 13:3, the psalmist asks the Lord to “bring light to my eyes.” Have you seen someone experience God bringing hope or renewed perspective even while facing mental health challenges?
TO CLOSE/TO PRAY:
Thank the group for sharing vulnerably tonight & consider closing with this prayer over the group:
Lord, You know our thoughts and the places where we quietly say, “How long, O Lord?” Today we bring our minds and hearts honestly before You. When we feel overwhelmed, renew us. When we feel alone, remind us of Your unfailing love. Grow in us compassion—for ourselves and for those walking through mental and emotional struggle.
Like the psalmist, help us trust in Your goodness, even while we wait.
Amen.
