The People of Jesus (Part 7): People of Humility

UPDATE: Thank you for bearing with us these last few weeks as I (Matt DeLano) was put on the shelf for a bit with a sudden appendectomy. Amber and I felt a lot of love and support, thank you for all the prayers and encouragement. As we head towards the middle of Summer, this week is our final week of Small Group Discussion Guides until we pick back up on Promotion Sunday, August 17th.

TO START: In our summer series, The People of Jesus, we’re walking through the letter of 1 Peter. This portion of Scripture offers deep assurance to the people of Jesus—especially when our faith initiates challenges, tension, or unforeseen opportunities. This week’s message focused on the assurance we have as people of humility.

TO READ: 1st Peter 5:6-11

TO DISCUSS:

(1.) Peter describes the devil as a “roaring lion looking for someone to devour".” What does this imagery convey about the enemy and his intentions towards us? How have you experienced this to be true?

(2.) Even more, we are implored to “resist [the devil], standing firm in the faith.” What does that mean practically from your perspective? What are some spiritual disciplines/rhythms/practices that hep us to build this kind of steadfastness?

(3.) Peter closes with a powerful promise/assurance… which do you feel like you need most from God right now: restoration, confirmation, strength or stability?

TO PRAY

To close small group, we invite you to spend time praying for one or more of the realities named in question #3. Then we invite you to close with this prayer over the group:

God of all grace, You see our hearts and our struggles. Thank You that our suffering is not eternal. You have called us to your eternal glory, and You are working in us even now. Spirit, we ask for You to restore what is broken, confirm what is shaken, strengthen what is weak and establish what is uncertain. We give You dominion over our lives—because You are faithful, and You reign forever. Amen.
