The Miraculous Work of Jesus (Part 4): Miraculous Provision

TO START: In this series, we walk through the seven miracles—or “signs,” as John calls them—recorded in his Gospel. Each miracle beautifully reveals both Jesus’ identity (who He is and what He’s like) and His work (what He does and will ultimately accomplish). In John 6, Jesus provides bread for thousands by multiplying a boy’s lunch—revealing Himself as the provider who miraculously multiplies the simple things we offer and ultimately leads us to feed on Him as the Bread of Life.

TO DISCUSS:

(1.) If we were making a movie about your life, what’s the craziest scene we’d have to include–something most of us probably don’t know yet?

(2.) After reading John’s account of Jesus feeding the crowd, what detail in his storytelling stands out to you most? Why do you think John included that specific detail?

(3.) If you were one of the disciples in the feeding of the crowd, do you think your response would be more like Philip’s (focused on the problem) or Andrew’s (bringing what little he could find)?

(4.) Looking back on your life, what’s a way—big or small—that you’ve seen God provide for you, but don’t always remember until you pause and reflect?

(5.) What’s one area of life that worries you most, and how could you trust Jesus’ provision there instead of trying to control it?

TO CLOSE/TO PRAY:

This week, we invite you to close in prayer using Psalm 127:2 as a way to center the prayers of the group, “In vain you rise early, to go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil, for he gives to his beloved sleep.” We invite you to read this Scripture and ask the group this question, “what am I working hard for right now in my life?”... Pause for a few minutes and invite folks to share what bubbles up and then close with a prayer for the strength to surrender the bread of anxious toil to God.
