W&W Generosity (Part 1): What is the Rhythm?
TO START: Today, we started a new mini-series on another rhythm in which we're collectively studying and practicing for the sake of building a Spirit-filled & Spirit-led life. For the next three weeks we're discussing the rhythm of generosity and the role it plays in our discipleship to Jesus.
In this first week, we defined generosity as the practice of organizing your life around God by stewarding your time, resources, and influence and investing them back into God’s work and the lives of others. Paul’s encouragement in 1 Timothy 6 reflects the teachings of Jesus, revealing that generosity not only keeps us from being blown off course but also ushers goodness and purpose into the life God designed for us.
TO READ: 1 Timothy 6:6-10
TO DISCUSS:
(1.) When was the last time someone’s generosity toward you meant the world to you or caught you completely off guard?
(2.) Jesus speaks frequently about generosity, inviting us to give and warning us against greed. How much emphasis have you experienced on generosity throughout your faith journey? Why is that?
(3.) In 1 Timothy 6:6–10, which description/warning do you feel most vulnerable to when your focus in life tends to be on accumulation?
(4.) In 1 Timothy 6:17–19, which description of a generous life that hopes in God do you most want to become true of you?
TO PRAY:
To close this week, consider what has God entrusted to you through your time, resources, or influence that you feel called to steward toward His purposes… Give a minute or so to reflect silently on prayer as a group and then invite folks to share with the group, then pray for one another to steward these gifts well.
