The Ten Words (Pt. 8): Handling the Truth

TO START: In The Ten Words series, we explore the personal and practical foundations God gives in the Exodus story, often known as the Ten Commandments.

In the eighth message of this series, we explore what it means to mimic God by embodying truth. Truth is meant to shape and flow from every area of our lives. The Lord never calls us into something that is not already true of His own nature. As we live truthfully, our lives bear faithful witness to our neighbors.

TO READ: Exodus 20:16

TO DISCUSS:

(1.) What is the funniest thing you were absolutely convinced was true when you were younger?

(2.) When have you seen someone embody truth in a way that was difficult but ultimately helpful to someone else?

(3.) When you think of God as truth, what guidance from Him have you followed and later found to be good and right?

(4.) In what area of your life (family, work, friendships, finances, etc.) have you found it most difficult to embody honesty, transparency, and truth?

(5.) After reading Jesus’ promise in John 16:13–14, what part of your week would you like your group to pray over, asking the Spirit of truth to lead you?

TO CLOSE/TO PRAY:

Leader: Lord, you are truth. Quiet our hearts and help us to walk in your truth” (pause for 30 sec)

Leader: Read Exodus 20:16

Leader: Invite the group to reflect in prayer on this question: “Is there any place in my life right now where I am not being fully truthful–in my words, my silence, or the way I present someone else?...Let the Spirit gently bring to mind: Conversations, Social Media Posts, Half-Truths, Exaggerations, Silence when truth was needed, Assumptions spoken as facts or anything else… Do not judge yourself – simply notice.”  (pause for a minute)... Then, invite any willing group members to share anything that comes up.

Leader: In light of what is shared, decide how to close it out together!
