Wells & Wineskins (Part 2): How Do We Practice Fasting?

TO START: Today we jumped into part 2 of the the third of five mini sermon series focused on the rhythms that help cultivate a Spirit-filled and Spirit-led life. In the second message of this series we considered what the Lord might be inviting us to do in the midst of fasting and how it might shape the way we participate in partnering with the Lord right now.

TO READ: Matthew 6:5-18

TO DISCUSS:

(1.) What gives you the most pause in considering taking up the rhythm of fasting?

(2.) How might your prayers—and your heart—change if you intentionally paired fasting with praying for someone or something specific this week? If you were to fast this week—even briefly—what would you intentionally pray for?

(3.) Can you share a time when a familiar passage of Scripture suddenly felt fresh or alive to you, like the disciples on the road to Emmaus? What made it different?

(4.) Jesus teaches that fasting is connected to recognizing our need for Him. In your life, what are some “pillars” you’ve leaned on instead of God—comfort, control, approval, success, or something else? How does fasting help reveal these?

(5.) This week, as you fast, consider which of the three areas you want to focus on in the midst of fasting: intercession, feasting on God’s word or dependence?

TO CLOSE/TO PRAY:

Leader: “Lord, we recognize we often lean on things other than You. As we fast this week, may our hearts be drawn closer to You, Lord.”

Leader: In the quiet, invite you to consider this question: “Who or what is God placing on your heart to intercede for?” (name them to God)

Leader: “We thank you for revealing who you are longing for us to pray for. Lord, we also ask you to speak through Scripture and help us to taste your words fresh. This week, we choose to rely on You instead of our comforts and control. Strengthen us by Your Spirit to trust You fully.”
