Seen (Part 5): Seeing the Merciful
TO START: Today, we are in the fifth week of our series, Seen, where we are relearning to see the world and people the way Jesus saw them during his time on earth. Each week, we are walking through one of Jesus' Beatitudes.
This Sunday, we unpacked Jesus’ encouragement to those who are merciful—those who are moved with compassion toward people in the midst of suffering, and who remain steadfast even when revenge or abandonment may feel like the most just response. The merciful reveal where mercy begins: with a merciful God.
TO READ: Matthew 5:1-12 (focus on v.7)
TO DISCUSS:
(1.) When you hear the word “mercy,” what’s a picture, story or experience that comes to mind? What makes that example memorable to you?
(2.) In the sermon, Matt describes mercy as both compassion that moves toward suffering and steadfast love that refuses to abandon. Which of those comes more naturally to you—and which is harder? Why?
(3.) Of the four reasons we resist mercy: it interrupts us, confronts us, feels scarce, and seems excessive. Which one do you most identify with, and what does that reveal about how you tend to respond when someone needs mercy from you?
(4.) Who is someone you’ve encountered whose mercy has helped you see what the Kingdom of God looks like? What did they do, and how might you become a vessel of that same mercy in your own relationships?
TO PRAY:
To close this week, spend some time praying together. Ask the Lord: Who is seeing the world and others with a merciful heart that you could encourage this week?
One way to do this could be to sit in silence with this question before the Lord and ask for God to highlight a specific person. Then, either have folks turn to the group member closest to them to share who they’re praying for OR everyone can share with the whole group. Then, spend a few minutes praying for those people together. Finally, ask God to show you one way you can love and honor that person this week.
