The Ten Words (Pt. 9): Redirecting Our Cravings
TO START: In The Ten Words series, we explore the personal and practical foundations God gives in the Exodus story, often known as the Ten Commandments.
In the final message of this series, we explore the invitation to contentment, no matter what relationships, circumstances, or possessions are in our lives or missing from them. True freedom to cherish the life God has given us comes not only from recognizing our blessings but also from considering how we can bless those around us.
TO READ: Exodus 20:17
TO DISCUSS:
(1.) What’s something you've seen at a friend’s house and immediately wanted?
(2.) What stories in the Bible reveal the repercussions of coveting among God’s people?
(3.) Which category tempts you most toward coveting: relationships, situations, or possessions?
(4.) When has gratitude helped you resist coveting and say, “This is enough”?
(5.) Which invitation from God would be most helpful in this season to combat coveting: examining your desires, celebrating others, or communing more regularly with God?
TO CLOSE/TO PRAY:
We invite you to close small group by praying over the answers to the last question: which invitation is the most helpful in this season and feel free to close with a prayer like this:
Thank You for the way You gently shape our hearts. You know how easily we begin to compare ourselves with others and desire what they have. At times we forget that You see us, care for us, and provide for us in ways that are good and wise. Lord, search our hearts. Help us notice the desires within us that pull us toward comparison or discontent. Give us humility to be honest with You about them. Teach us to rejoice in the good You are doing in other people’s lives. When others are blessed, help us celebrate with genuine joy rather than measuring our lives against theirs. Remind us that Your love and generosity are not limited. And draw us closer to You. Help us spend time in Your presence so our hearts learn that You are enough and that what You give each of us is part of Your good care. Amen.
